BEAUTY DIY: Phoebe Walters’ tips to recreate the ‘FREESTYLERS’ editorial beauty looks
This is one of the pullouts from SEASON zine issue 07. Make-up artist Phoebe Walters created the football-inspired looks in the beauty editorial, shot by Jackson Bowley and styled by Rickardo Mattocks-Maxwell. Football face-paint is nothing new but Walters upgrades the ritual by incorporating make-up and imaginative designs that are surprisingly easy to recreate. Products needed
Snazaroo face paints
MAC Chromacake pigments
Kryolan Aquacolour palettes
Grease paints and acrylic paints
Different sized brushes
Starting base
‘Cleanse using Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water then tone with a rose water spray – my favourite is by Sukin. Apply a thick lip balm at this stage to allow it to sink in by the time you start the makeup. Do a face massage to plump up the skin and get the blood flowing around the face – my favourite moisturisers are Avène Hydrance Optimale Light Hydrating Cream and Caudalie Vinosource S.O.S Intense Moisturizing Cream. Lastly, curl your lashes and brush your brows.’
Build it up
‘Snazaroo and MAC Chromacake pigmented formulas are really easy to use as they’re water-based and you can control the density of the product. If you want something more long-lasting, perhaps for a football game, use an acrylic paint by MAC.’
European Champion energy
‘To recreate the Liverpool FC look and make it more wearable: draw a line in white eyeliner from the inner corner of the eye creating a point and extending to halfway across the lid. Then use a red eyeliner or a red liquid lip on a thin brush and wing out towards the end of the eyebrow. Take a small brush and blend the two colours together to create a gradient liner. Finish with curling lashes and black mascara.’
Kit inspo
‘Each makeup look was influenced by the specific jersey’s colour palettes. For the Roma look, I wanted to reference the logo quite literally so I wrote ‘Roma’ across Brit’s face using black face paint and an eyeliner brush. I then created a colour gradient circling the word. The Celtic and Paris looks were a bit more abstract, creating an expressive look focusing on all the colours used in the shirt.’
Wow brows
‘In order to achieve fluffy brows, give them a good brush before applying product. This allows you to see if you have any gaps and where you might want to fill in. Look at where your natural brow hairs are and use pencil or powder to create hair strokes, I would avoid using a product to “colour in” your brows. Keep the strokes light and defined, not too blocky.’
