Andrew Brown wrote ‘The most blinding and obvious deficiency of football as a religion is that it lacks any kind of theology— and excludes many women,’ for The Guardian in 2013; and we’re proving him wrong in our biggest issue to date. While there’s still work to be done, women are arguably more included and visible in football culture in 2018 and in our opinion, total football, Pep Guardiola’s zonal philosophy and supporters’ rituals and superstitions en masse can be classed as theology. With the World Cup (essentially a football pilgrimage every four years) kicking off this month, and the Heavenly Bodies- Fashion and the Catholic Imagination exhibition at the Met Museum, it seemed timely to explore religion and faith via the female focused football and fashion stories we tell.
