FASHION DIY: Upcycle a football shirt into a scarf in 9 steps from Georgina Hunt
Time: 60 minutes
Materials:
An old football shirt
Mid-weight cotton drill
Fusing (I would recommend using a webbing that reacts when heated)
Pencil
Ruler
Fabric scissors
Pin
Tailor’s chalk
Method:
To make your pattern, draw out the size of your football scarf onto pattern or parchment paper – use the measurements from an existing scarf that you have. Make sure you add a one centimetre seam border around the pattern for seam allowance.
Take your football shirt and use chalk to create lines where you are going to cut up the shirt. Think collage! Think about brand/logo positioning too as it can be quite nice to position the team’s badge at the end of the panel so it’s seen when worn. You need to do this twice if you want the shirt to be on both sides.
To sew your panels together, layer your pieces with a half a centimetre fold over and topstitch to create a collage from the fabric pieces. Think about mismatching textures from the shirt.
Using your pattern, cut two panels – one for the front and one for the back. Do the same using the fusing.
To fuse them together, use a high heat iron and place a large piece of cotton drill uncut across the ironing board, then place the fusing followed by your collage of shirt panel.
Place another piece of fabric or pattern paper over to protect your iron and heat until the pieces are glued together. Repeat for both front and back panels and cut out panels once stuck completely to the cotton drill.
With a one centimetre seam allowance, sew the panels together with both the right side of the pieces facing each other. Pin to make things nice and easy, then sew from the bottom left corner all the way around leaving enough space to turn the piece inside out. I would leave about six centimetres.
Turn your scarf the right way out and blind stitch the hole that is left. Press down all edges and edge topstitch. If desired add fringing between the edges for a more traditional football scarf.
Rep your team looking banging!
